John Evans

Director

As a Board member, John provides strategic oversight and supports the charity’s long-term direction. He is committed to the organisation’s mission of reducing stigma around substance use and helping vulnerable people lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

With a background in employment policy, John brings valuable expertise in how work can restore confidence, purpose and wellbeing. He is particularly passionate about our employability services, which empower people in recovery to rebuild their lives and re-engage with their communities.

John has spent the past four years working in UK central government on economic policy, following earlier analytical roles in the Scottish public sector focused on employment and skills. Before entering government, he completed a PhD at Strathclyde Business School, researching skills, training and employer behaviour. He also serves on the Samaritans Scotland Committee, again offering guidance on governance.

John’s personal connection to the impacts of addiction and loss within his own family inspired his involvement with Murray’s Initiative. He remains dedicated to using his skills and experience to help shape a fairer, evidence-based approach to public policy.
