Volunteers have been at the heart of Murray’s Initiative since we were founded in 1965.
From welcoming clients at our front desk to supporting group sessions and fundraising, our volunteers play a vital role in helping us reduce harm and build healthier communities.
Volunteering with us is extremely fulfilling — a chance to develop skills, meet new people and make a real difference in people’s lives.

Ways To Volunteer

There are a number of opportunities for volunteers to work directly with clients at Murray’s Initiative. These include becoming a volunteer counsellor.
To become a volunteer counsellor you must:
Have successfully completed suitable Diploma in Counselling or COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills - find out more about this course here.
Participate in selection process which involves attending interviews and training
Successfully complete, or already hold, a SACC Specialist Alcohol Course (30 hours) such as Counselling People Towards Behaviour Change.

Please note, Murray’s Initiative is unable to offer placement opportunities for external students. If you are completing your Diploma at Murray’s Initiative, please contact your tutor for placement information.

Support Murray’s Initiative to secure vital funding through grant applications, community fundraising and events. You will help plan and deliver activities, represent the charity at events and build links with supporters.

Support one of our structured group programmes. Volunteers will need to hold a COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills and complete our Advanced Alcohol training course. An aim to commit to a regular time commitment would be ideal to ensure continuity for the group.

Help keep our City Centre office running smoothly by greeting clients, answering phones, supporting with admin tasks and ensuring visitors feel welcome and relaxed. You will play a key role as the first friendly face people see when they arrive.
